Her iconic R . S .V. P sculptures - performative objects made from pantyhose and materials such as sand and stone - have been acquired by important American museums. The publication accompanies the first solo exhibition of Nengudi in Senga Nengudi began her career among a group of avant-garde black artists active in Los Angeles and New York in the 1970s and 1980s. She also absorbed influences from feminism, African and Japanese dance, music, and religious rituals, which continue to shape her installations, performances, sculptures, and collaborative works. In the 1970s, Colorado-based artist Senga Nengudi worked in Los Angeles as part of an emerging community of African American artists that – alongside the political upsurge of Black Power – engaged in new ways of expression beyond the oppressive and colonial Western art canon. The corporeal aspect of her sculptures often recalls contorted flesh, suggesting genitalia and breasts, and places Senga Nengudi: Improvisational Gestures is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Gallery of Contemporary Art. The presentation at the Henry is organized by Nina Bozicnik, Assistant Curator, with support from 4Culture, ArtsFund, and the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.

In a wide-ranging conversation with curator and Side by Side co-editor Allie Tepper, artist Senga Nengudi discusses the evolution of her artistic practice in the context of collective practice and exchange. Together, they discuss Nengudi’s work with the LA-based collective Studio Z, her decades-long collaboration with artist and friend Maren Hassinger, and her many performative experiments
